6 Faith-Filled and Fun Family Ideas For The Summer
Summer is finally here! The season is a great time to spend time with a family and go deeper in your faith together. We get to enjoy the beautiful warm weather every summer, so it’s important to take time to reflect on and be thankful for the life around us that God has blessed us with. While there are no holidays specifically designated to our faith in the summer, we’re halfway to Christmas. Why not use the time off from school to keep your faith strong with your children? Here are some of our faith-focused activities for this summer to try with your family.
Open mic night.
Everyone loves karaoke, so have a gospel sing along for fun and faith-based activity this summer! Have a night in your backyard where you and your kids get up and sing along to your favorite gospel songs. Choose from these gospel songs for kids or remember some of your favorites and have everyone sing one song while the others hum along. Then at the end of the night, you can all dance around and sing as a family!
My middle son is the family entertainer so this is something that is right up his alley. Who am I kidding? All of my boys like to dance, sing and entertain everyone all the time. Everyone is sure to have a blast, and you get to include your faith in something exciting for everyone.
Attend church events this summer.
Your family is probably in the routine of going to church on every Sunday, and that may seem sufficient. To stay connected to your faith every day of the week, it’s great to participate in other faith-filled activities going on in your neighborhood. Read your church’s bulletin and see what events they have planned as a community in the coming months. Attending any events your church puts on as a family opens up the opportunity to connect with other families who share your faith, volunteer or serve others. It also provides the kids with an opportunity to make new friends.
Faith-based movies
At the end of a hot summer day, it can be nice to regroup inside the house and have an old-fashioned movie night. With mainstream media the way it is today, parents often have to wonder if the content their children are being exposed to is appropriately aligning with the family’s beliefs and morals. For your family movie night, you can watch wholesome Christian movies with Pure Flix to ensure that you don’t have to worry about content while you relax.
Our family movie night is typically every Friday but during the summer, we watch a lot more movies and just enjoy hanging out together.
Weekly family dinner
With the kids home much more often, pick a designated day of the week to sit down as a family and eat dinner together. If you can have a meal together every day of the week, that’s even better! You can cook your favorite meals (can someone say BBQ time?) and then sit around the dining room table having a good time with one another.
Take turns saying grace before you eat, and share what you’re most grateful for that day. Thanking God for your blessings is significant in connecting with your faith on a daily basis. This is something that doesn’t have to only be done at Thanksgiving.
At-home Bible camp
While sending your children to Bible camp over the summer months is a wonderful idea, you can also make it an experience that the whole household can participate in. Every day when you’re all together, pick a passage from the Bible to reflect on as a group. No matter the theme you’ve chosen for that day, there are always great Bible verses to choose from. Everyone can take notes, provide their feedback, and reflect on the messages presented to bond over a faith-filled day. This is an awesome way for different members of the family can hear how God has spoken to each person about a particular passage of Scripture.
Volunteer this summer.
During the school year, your family might not have as much time to volunteer in the community as you’d like. With the extra free time, volunteer at your local soup kitchen, help an elderly neighbor with their groceries, or pick up trash in the park. Volunteering is something that every family should do together, and it is a great way to teach your children the importance of serving others. Your kids will love the feeling of helping others and will see how God can and will use them to touch others’ lives as well.
This summer is the perfect opportunity to reflect upon your faith and go deeper in it, as a family. Any of these fun activities can help you do that and will leave your family impacted in a positive way.
